Organic Recycling

https://tipa-corp.com/blog/whats-organic-recycling/

TIPA Corp

What is Organic Recycling and why is important to us?

Organic recycling refers to a closed-loop activity where natural materials are converted from organic waste to energy, gas, water, and biomass.

Is organic recycling the circle of nature? Yes. We also wanted to clear all misinformation regarding recycling vs. composting in our latest article. But things are a little more complicated. Misinformation regarding recycling, organics, and composting continues to spread.

We are being constantly bombarded with newer studies, articles, regulations, and recommendations wherever we go; in the news, over the web, at the supermarket, our homes, communities, etc. The bottom line, our intentions are good, we want to reduce plastic waste, together. So, what is our best bet?

First Things First: What is Organic Recycling?

Organic recycling usually breaks down to either AD (Anaerobic Digestion) to be used mostly as energy, or to fully composting (Aerobic Digestion), where it mainly goes back to the soil and used as biological fertilizer to help grow new crops.

Here we are discussing the latter loop of organic recycling, and composting. After sorting correctly, the waste for composting is collected by a local municipality/ commercial organic recycling facility and then converted into something renewable.

The process of composting, where food scraps and leftovers break down to another form of useful organic matter, is like the transformations of nature, where caterpillars turn into beautiful butterflies.

Why is organic waste recycling important to our environment?

We produce a lot of waste, and it doesn’t just disappear once we throw it into the bin. 40% of all food grown and produced in the world goes to waste, and when it decomposes it creates methane, a greenhouse gas, up to 80% more potent than carbon dioxide.

Organic recycling can be a viable way to put your food and organic waste to effective use in quite a few ways:

  1. It stabilizes organic waste, and acts as a fertilizer in agriculture that holds more water, prevents soil erosion, improves the soil’s nutrient content, and can increase crop fields.

  2. Organic recycling, compost, also used as a biofertilizer which avoids the use of other chemical fertilizers.

  3. Organic recycling introduces popular concepts like cleaner production, zero-waste policy, commercial organics recycling, sustainability, and circular economy.

Organic recycling’s solutions to end plastic waste

We can’t change the world overnight, yet we can start by being aware of the facts. Despite the information overload and misinformation around us concerning how we are handling our waste, there is one thing we could all agree on, if we minimize our waste now, we won’t have as much waste to worry about later.

  • Organic recycling methodology is as nature’s, where there is no waste. Organic Recycling replenishes topsoil and maintains soil fertility: it stores carbon, regulates water, and increases not only soil biodiversity, and organic matter levels, but also soil buffering capacity.

  • Compostable Packaging supports 3 of the top global priorities: plastic pollution, GHG emissions, and soil fertility.

Process of organic waste recycling

Collection – either from your home kitchen (home compost), or to be dropped off at your local compost recycling site.

  • Decontamination – for health and safety.

  • Preparation – shredding or pulverizing to reduce the size of the waste articles.

  • Recycling process – different organic recycling methods fit for different end products.

  • Screening and grading – to add value to compost grades.

How can we help with organic recyclable solutions?

Our global earth environmental problems are calling for each one of us, to shine our own unique light in the world, and act now. At TIPA we have been working for over a decade to address the high-end markets of flexible compostable packaging solutions.

Social Responsibility

Vee   ‘your company’s CSR has never been nicer!’

Do your Best. It’s worth it.

By empowering your people to help the community at large, you not only benefit that community but build a community in your business, essentially a vibe. And the further success of your business will trickle down and spillover from that vibe.

The magic of teamwork

Visionary leaders manifest a common direction for their company. To shepherd their team towards their goals, requires the immensely valuable skill of being able to tackle conflicts together.

Togetherness can be achieved from employees’ solidarity in CSR, and inevitably, when employees emulate the company’s stellar leadership, spirit and performance.

So, when it’s all conducted towards a one specific business mission, doing good isn’t just a personal feeling, it’s a common vibe.

Supercharge your staff

Giving your employees the chance to rain sunshine down on their community makes your employees feel more complete and better able to work as a whole. They will get to practice their passion, kindness and patience which will make your team stronger and more effective. Indeed, Vee’s research suggests volunteer programs can help increase revenue by up to 43% as a result of improved productivity gained from a stronger team.

Good deeds are good business

It’s never really only about the volunteering: We make friends with unknown colleagues, build crucial professional networks and collaborate. Essentially, we get to live the company’s reputation and culture in a moment that there’s a need for inspiring models of shared kindness – it might be fashionable for business to pursue CSR programs at the moment – but its impact is real, and it’s worth it. If you aren’t already making good business, you might want to consider switching sides.

Lead or Be Led

When you are the one that makes the change in the environment, rather than letting the environment change you, you manifest to your staff leadership qualities of self awareness, resilience and responsibility that can lead your company to dominate your market. Not only do you achieve a more cohesive and determined team, you may also see improvements to customer satisfaction. This is supported by Vee’s research, which suggests a 34% increase in customer satisfaction can be achieved as a result of improved efficiencies gained from a proactive staff.

Do good, better.

Doing Good with Maya Rubin

Weekly Radio Show, Tips

Straight from Jerusalem Radio

For me, hosting a radio show is one of the most exciting jobs out there. The pure excitement right before I go on air is palpable; once I start the show and go ON AIR (even for pre-recorded shows) I always experience an adrenalin rush, despite often being comfortably seated in a calm, quiet studio!

I’ve been a radio talk show host for over 10 years now – and even though before I started recording my first few shows I had severe bowel movements, which have thankfully stopped, I still get pleasantly excited every time I’m about to start recording. The routine of sitting on my chair, putting on my headphones, taking a deep breath and putting on my “radio” voice: that focused, clear way of talking you only hear on the airwaves, is utterly electrifying!

So how do you get more confident and build this routine? First thing’s first, it takes time and practice; essentially experience. Secondly, I find that although I do come very much prepared to my show, I still keep it very spontaneous and always aim to be alert to all last minute changes. Finally, always be open to learning something new, and with that in mind, here are some truths straight from the studio to check out:

It’s all about ‘Love’

It’s better to choose a topic for your show that you truly love. Otherwise, you will either get bored yourself – and even worse, your listeners will too! Without choosing topics you love, you will find it difficult to stick it out during the “bad days”, those challenging, less exciting experiences that will inevitably come your way (like that time all my all my guests canceled their interviews at the last minute and I had only a few minutes to come up with a whole new show! Now, if you are offered a specific subject to talk about rather than choosing it yourself, I recommend finding your favorite points and ideas about that subject, which will make you super excited to interact with your interviewees – this will come across on air and your listeners will join in on your good vibes as well.

Be honest!

Listeners can easily pick up on pretenders – especially if you are a beginner. Be straight forward with your facts, questions and attitude. The radio waves can be tricky – they have a habit of amplifying everything you say; starting of course from the delicate sound of breathing; but also your tone of speech; and often loudest of all your   motives and intentions. So, treat the microphone with respect, be honest and you’ll amplify the best parts of your character.

Spice it up

You can capture your listener’s attention through your tone of speech – never let yourself do a monotone, robot voice! – use an “elastic” voice, go high pitch, low, be surprised and laugh! Remember that your listeners can’t see you, but they can imagine with their eyes what they hear with their ears.

Embrace the weird

Eccentric or funny facts about your interviewees always keeps listeners engaged; the “different” stuff you find from your pre-interview research can make for good anticipation, leaving the listeners curious to hear what happens next.

Don’t be shy

Expose something about yourself. As people, we not only share some degree of voyeurism (hence the huge ratings reality shows achieve) but also relate to similar feelings or experiences other people have been thorough. So by introducing yourself genuinely you can engage your listeners to relate to your experiences or alternatively so they can be in awe of your journey – this will make them come back from more.

Be kind and generous

Charisma comes from the Greek word: gift of grace. So feel free to go ahead and show your incredible charisma by making your guests feel comfortable and joyful on your show. Avoid hating; avoid anger; avoid screaming; avoid negativity. It’s not always easy, but even if you are strongly   opposed to what some of your interviewers have to say or think, try to be as gentle and loving as you can be to them.

Have fun!

Otherwise why do it?! I have been doing this for so long and it doesn’t get old because I have fun every week. There are always great guests to talk to, creative people all around, and an amazing and dynamic energy that permeates the studio. So even though we sometimes suffer the pressures of a tight schedule to follow or challenging budgets to adhere to, working together makes the experience fun. After all, there’s no business like show business.

It might all sound a bit challenging, but when it all comes together it’s extremely satisfying and indeed as magical as it might sound.

How do you know if your packaging is compostable?

When consumer demand for sustainable packaging is on the rise, and more and more multi-national companies are being required to meet & achieve sustainability goals, the question that comes up is: How do you know that your sustainable packaging is legit? What things should you be looking for to ensure you’re on the right side of new environmental regulations?

We believe true sustainable packaging solutions should never leave any inorganic waste behind. Which is why TIPA’s packaging solutions are certified compostable.

Whether you are a brand inquiring what the real eco-friendly packaging solutions are, or whether you’re an end-consumer who wants to make sure that your favorite brands use sustainable packaging with a viable end-of-life – below are some general points to guide you: standards, labs, testing and certifications.

So, let’s take a look at what these actually mean.

1. Compostable Packaging Standards

Several global organizations have defined the standards and requirements for compostable packaging certifications including The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), The International Organization for Standardization (ISO), TUV AUSTRIA, and the European Union.

The standard that is arguably the most international in scope and compliance with the composability requirement, is the EN 13432. This harmonized European Commission standard, is linked to the European Directive on Packaging and Packaging Waste (94/62/EC) for packaging to be considered recoverable. It defines how quickly and to what extent a biodegradable plastic must degrade under industrial composting conditions.

This standard prescribes (among other requirements) for disintegration after twelve weeks, that at least 90% of the product should be converted to CO2 and H2O and the remaining material should be able to pass through a 2 x 2 mm mesh. Biodegradable product producers use this standard and certification schemes developed upon this standard, to show that their products are compostable. Industrial composters run their process in less time than the described 12 weeks in the standard.

The American Society for Testing and Materials for the labeling of plastics specifications designed ASTM D6400 to be aerobically composted in municipal and industrial facilities.

The International Organization for Standardization set ASTM 5338/ ISO 14855 to define a test method which helps to determine the degree and rate of aerobic biodegradation of plastics in a controlled composting environment, that is, under laboratory conditions.

TIPA®️ compostable adheres to all these standards (EN 13432, ASTM D6400, and AS 4736).

2. Labs & Testing

Only accredited testing laboratories can perform tests for all compostable products, to grant them with official home and industrial compostable certifications, by the agencies mentioned above.

Biodegradable product testing generally examines a product’s compostable materials, intermediates, and additives as well as final characteristics and composition.

What are the testing requirements for industrial composting?

  • Biodegradation: A minimum 90% biodegradation vs a control sample is required in a maximum of 6 months.

  • Disintegration: A pilot composting test ensures that the material physically breaks down within 3 months.

  • Material Characterization: This includes heavy metal testing and determination of the volatile solid content.

  • Ecotoxicity: Compost from the disintegration test is used to ensure that the components have no adverse effects on the plant growth.

What are the characteristics of requirements for home composting?

Consumers actively compost their garden waste at home, either in compost bins or compost heaps, eliminating the need for collection. The temperature in a garden compost heap is generally lower and less constant than in an industrial composting environment. Therefore, composting in the garden is a more extreme and slower-paced process. Under these conditions, certain compostable materials do not exhibit sufficient biodegradation.

Standard home compost temperatures tend to hover at 25 ± 5ᵒC, with a target humidity of around 50%. Under normal home composting conditions, the packaging will disintegrate within 6 months, and fully biodegrade within a year.

 3. Compostable Packaging Certifications

The certifiers below, which are globally established agencies, adhere to the highest quality requirements of compostable certifications. They committed to providing all their services in an ethical, socially, and environmentally responsible manner.

  • TUV AUSTRIA guarantee that all the packaging and products bearing their OK compost INDUSTRIAL label, are biodegradable in an industrial composting plant. This applies to all their components, inks, and additives.

  • OK compost HOME programme, as mentioned before, does not explicitly refer to a certain standard, but lists all technical requirements a product must meet to obtain certification. Defined in 2003, it has served as a pioneer in this field, and as the basis for the drafting of several standards such as: Australia: AS 5810 (2010), France: NF T 51800 (2015), Europe: prEN 17427 (2020).

  • TÜV Rheinland Group and DIN, the German Institute for Standardization jointly run DIN CERTCO and the European Bioplastics e. V. DIN CERTCO. They can apply the internationally recognized Compostable Mark (“Seedling”) as well as the OK compost.

  • BPI is North America’s leading certifier of compostable products and packaging. They provide technically and scientifically credible certifications for materials that biodegrade inbiologically active environments. The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards certify the BPI specifically to commercial environments, therefor BPI’s certification is strictly limited to commercial compostability.

  • The ABA launched Australian Standard 4736-2006, compostable and biodegradable plastics – “Biodegradable plastics suitable for composting and other microbial treatment” which is known as the ‘seedling logo’ certification system throughout Australia and New Zealand.

  • The Cré Compostable Certification Scheme is the only Irish scheme providing third party independent assessment that compostable products can be put into food waste recycling bins (brown bins) and processed in industrial composting plants in Ireland.

All TIPA®’s compostable packaging films and laminates are Home and/or Industrial compostable hold these certifications.

As you can see, it’s a journey to certify compostable packaging; it takes consistency, commitment, and determination. However, by using properly certified packaging you can be confident in achieving your sustainability goals.

Personal Writing

‘I love my psoriasis’

It wasn’t until 6 June 2021 that I remembered, how few years back in the midst of my career as a model and actress, I’d had stubborn psoriasis on my legs and elbows. Needless to say, as a woman who practices high standards of personal hygiene and certainly as a model it was a surprising and unpleasant sight – to say the least.

For those of you who don’t know what psoriasis is, it’s an autoimmune disease characterized by raised areas of abnormal skin, or how my friend Chad and fellow actor used to call me Scabby.

Just after finishing the recording of my weekly radio show in Jerusalem Radio that afternoon, I bumped into Elad, a loud rambunctious broadcaster who greeted me with a typically warm hug. As we did I noticed he had some red skin rashes behind his ears so I asked him about it. He told me that it was some kind of skin condition that I had never heard about, although “it’s in the psoriasis’ family.” he said thinking I (the international model) would have no idea what he was talking about, only to be surprised one minute later to find out that I had it as well.

Immediately he began looking for any kind of trace marks which I might have had, and I told him that I cured myself and that it was quite a journey, in fact it still was. So he asked “well yeah like best doctors and stuff?” he was intrigued when I answered no. Well, I did go to the best skin doctors in Beverly Hills and NYC who tried to treat me with creams, oils and there’s even a little spot on my leg from steroids shot that my body didn’t like – they went nowhere. I tried other treatments too. On one of my family visits to Israel I went to a skin specialist there, who recommended me to first soak in the Israeli dead-sea and later sunbathe on the beach where supposedly the sun is even better for you since it’s the lowest place in the world. That worked for a brief period of time, perhaps a week or so, but when I arrived back in the states the psoriasis had followed me there too. Elad confessed he had experienced something similar “yes if only momentarily and it doesn’t go away.”

Back in the USA, during winter in NYC, I was staring in a super-bowl commercial where my legs were exposed and I needed a heavy makeup job to cover it. The makeup artist who witnessed how sensitive I was regarding my psoriasis, as well as how dramatic my mom was when she saw my patched legs at the clothes’ fitting (she was literally crying) recommend a world-famous skin specialist in Austria and to follow a no whole wheat bread and sugar free diet. At that time, living in NYC my diet mainly consisted of whole wheat bread and lots of sugar, so I began cutting them off substantially from my daily routine. Nevertheless, I still had psoriasis.

By then the radio host was really curious to hear what did work for me, “anything that you did, even if it sounds completely stupid I really want to hear it, please!”
So I told him that the only way it went away wasn’t after all the oils, bath-soaks, diets, sunbathing and more – and even though it might sound completely ridiculous – it was only when I really truly loved and accepted my psoriasis that it decided to go away. Thus playing into my abandonment issues! But seriously, I was adamant to love my psoriasis that I literally caressed my legs every evening where my skin was raised and told my psoriasis “I love you it’s ok, you are here, you are not here and I love you.” Not too long after this, it went away and it hasn’t been back since. Elad nodded and said:  “yes I’ve heard about something like that,” then he insisted that I tell him for how long I had loved and caressed my legs because “I need to know what I’m looking at here.” “I honestly don’t remember it was for a while,” I admitted to him.  I guess I don’t remember because it doesn’t really matter to me anymore; I “accept my life” and take responsibility for my behavior; I meditate (practice mindfulness) every day for few minutes; learn philosophy as a way of life in order to be conscious and notice the things I go through in my daily life to stay peaceful and compassionate. “What, you don’t get angry?” Elad asked me angrily. “Yes of course I do.” When it happens I look at the situation, try to understand the other person’s perspective and explore why I’m bothered by it; usually it’s something unresolved in me which then I learn to lovingly accept my “fault”. “It’s very important for me to grow in this way,” I told Elad “that’s how I choose to live my life:  I love you my psoriasis, it’s ok, you are here you are not here and I love you.”
